Includes: The Adventure of the Final Problem · The Adventure of "Gloria Scott" · The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor · The Adventure of the Resident Patient
Classic Sherlock Holmes at its best. In The Final Problem, perhaps the greatest of the short stories of Sherlock Holmes, the English detective encounters his most formidable rival, Professor Moriarty. "The Napoleon of Crime" is how Holmes describes his adversary to his faithful companion, Dr. Watson, as they move to the ultimate confrontation at the Reichenbach Falls. Also in this collection is the intriguing mystery of the disappearing bride in The Noble Bachelor, and two threats from the past in "Gloria Scott" and The Resident Patient.
David Timson's experienced treatment of Holmes makes listening to these final exploits a pleasure. His restrained and mannered acting allows the text to shine through, and this is vital as we hear what may be the end of Sherlock Holmes. If you're expecting Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett, don't--expect instead Conan Doyle's beloved prose in the aural equivalent of a smooth merlot. These stories capture the spirit of the age, a time when people rested for months after a nasty emotional shock, of which there are plenty here. The CD hardcase and packaging combine to make this a nice addition to your audio library. D.J.B. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine
